George Mitchell Teachers and Teaching Assistants Learn to Cope with Learning in a Different Language

The EAL department and Language Across the Curriculum Team helped teachers understand how it feels to learn in another language.

As a result we all learned different strategies to support EAL learners in our classrooms. The pictures are of our teachers and TAs leading and learning.

The strategies we were introduced to include:

  • using visual stimuli coupled with translated keywords to convey messages
  • dictogloss (reconstructing texts through listening and recording keywords)
  • interpreting exam questions and scaffolding answers
  • reading with images
  • Use of sentence stems to support structured writing
  • asking questions and shaping answers

Teachers and Teaching Assistants will be trying out these ideas in their classrooms to improve learning for all pupils including bilingual pupils and pupils who speak English as an additional language. Look out for them!
