Leyton School George Mitchell win 14 medals in the Borough Athletics Championship

George Mitchell School’s talented athletes came back from the Borough Athletics Championship with an impressive 14 medal haul.

Pupils from around East London arrived at the Lee Valley Athletics Centre to compete for their respective schools.

The George Mitchell team winners were impressive on track and in the field events.

Year eight Jugal Mayavova brought home two gold medals with victory in both the 200m and long jump.

Rivaldo Nunes and Max Makaka in Year nine both won individual medals, with Makaka picking up gold in both the 100m and triple jump and Nunes finishing third in the 200m and second in the javelin.

Nunes, Makaka, Tamim Syed and Malachi Williams then joined together to win gold in the 4x100m relay, reaching the final without losing a single race during qualifying or heats.

The school's acting head of PE, Tom Collier, said “With the London 2012 Olympics less than a year away, we could be looking at some of Great Britain’s future athletes.”

While the younger pupils were tackling the track, GCSE PE students travelled to the White Water Olympic Centre in Hertfordshire.

Melissa McLeod, Abubakar Mohammed and Jack Seabrook were given the chance to experience white water rafting at the specialist centre, which has been constructed for the London 2012 Olympics.

The pupils were given wetsuits and helmets, and, after a quick safety talk, were ready to tackle the course.

After fighting the waves, Abubakar Mohammed said: “This is the best trip I’ve ever been on since joining the school.”
