Photography club

Photography club was initially set up to help students who wanted to enter the ‘I click’ national photography competition, which is sponsored by Sightsavers international in November 2009.

After entering the competition, Amina Nawaz,10M and Anisa Mirza,10W were selected as ‘highly commended’ for the South East (11 to 14 category) and Nadiyah Begum, 8m was selected as a ‘Runner up’. Their photos, selected from hundreds of entries submitted by aspiring young photographers from across the UK, were displayed in a special exhibition alongside photos by Harry Potter star Katie Leung and X-Factor popstars ‘Same Difference’ at the Oxo gallery on London’s South Bank. Amina said, “The competition was good because we got to go to London and see our pictures in the Gallery and meet other photographers. In photography club I enjoyed using the studio equipment with the professional lights and backdrop.”

The budding photographers also recently visited a Photography Exhibition by ‘Rankin’ (a photographer, publisher and film director, with a reputation as one of the world's leading photographers). Taliha Gazi 8F said, “The Ranking Exhibition was a very stimulating experience as it gave me and my friends the chance to explore very unique and abstract styles of photography. We were then able to include this knowledge into our own work.”

Due to its popularity, the photography club continued after the competition and it still continues to grow in numbers. One of our newest members, Jake Steadman 7M said “I‘ve learnt how to use a camera properly, using the flash and timer, and I’ve learnt how to change the pictures in photoshop; I’ve learnt things I’ve never done before”.

Photography club meets every Wednesday at 3.30pm to 4.30pm and all year groups are welcome. We are going to be working towards an exhibition in the summer with Riverley School (Art department) and St. Josephs school (Drama department) entitled ‘Our Community’. Anyone interested in joining can speak to Mr. Bushell in the Reprographics Department, George Mitchell All through School.
